Monte Pittman / Singer-Songwriter & Live Guitarist for Madonna
“Pain, Love & Destiny” By Monte Pittman
At ILL Critics, we love music of all kinds as long as it is good. We would like to introduce our reader to Monte Pittman. Monte is a singer and songwriter that is the live guitarist for Madonna. He has a new project that you all should check out “Pain, Love & Destiny” that is coming out on October 3, 2011.
How has working with Madonna influenced your music?
She’s always aware of every detail that’s going on, and is always coming up with creative new ideas with her music. She’s the Queen of Reinvention. For me, I guess, I’m always trying to take in everything around me, along the way, including all of my experiences — and those have helped to shape and define my music. I have absolutely learned things through my experiences with her and all of the musicians I’ve ever worked with.
What did you learn about your audience from the Kickstarter campaign?
That the rules of yesterday no longer apply. People like to believe in something and get behind it when they do. I also learned that a lot more people wanted to hear what I was going to do next than I had realized.
Thinking back to early childhood, what was your first experience with music like? What song do you remember most as a child?
I always wanted to go in my sister’s room so I could listen to her music — everything from Kiss to Ozzy to Hendrix — and my mom always had a really cool collection of music, as well. She liked to listen to a lot of Gypsy jazz, John Denver and America. Then I got a little toy guitar and I would stand on my bed, as if it was a stage, and just play like Kiss’s “Alive!” was coming out of my guitar.
How do you rate your live performance ability? Do you feel better performing live or in the studio? What would you like to change or improve?
There’s always room to improve but I’m confident that if I’m playing and you’re there, we’re going to have a good time. Also, when playing live you’re already aware of the songs you are going to play, whereas in the studio, you’re creating new music, so it relies a lot more on your own creativity. Being creative for me is just channeling stuff. For the new album, “Pain, Love & Destiny,” I took vocal lessons multiple times a week, so I’m really getting into that now.
